27 Dec Training A Puppy Versus an Adult Dog
Next Level Kennels is North Carolina’s premier dog training facility. We work with the dog and the owner to build confidence and good behavior in everyday environments. But when your dog leaves the facility, be it from Puppy University to the 3 week board and Train- the lessons and training elements learned with us must be reinforced at home or else dogs can forget!
But training a puppy versus training an adult dog are very different experiences. Here are some of the major difference is training a puppy versus an adult:
1. Attention Span
Younger dogs might seem like they see the world as if everything is brand new and exciting! That’s because they do- it’s one of the cutest things about a young dog. One of the things that comes with being hyper aware of external stimuli is the propensity to give into distraction more than a dog that has training and experience in everyday situations. Sometimes your puppy may struggle to focus on you and your commands- this is because they are so eager to take in all of the sights, smells and sounds! Be mindful and patient early on.
2. Relationship with the Crate
Establishing and maintaining a positive relationship with the crate early on is an investment not only into your experience as a dog owner, but it results in far less stress and anxiety into the dogs adulthood. An adult god with experience is going to deal with a crate much better than a dog that hasn’t had as much time and training.
Positively associate the crate with treats, affirmation, etc. Doing this with your puppy is a great way to ensure a healthy relationship with the crate as your dog matures.
3. Adult dogs have had more time with their habits
In the same way that time and experience can work for you in training, it can also work against you. The more time an adult dog has had in its bad habits, the harder it can be to “un-train” those habits and help install good ones. While it can be difficult at first, don’t be afraid to lean on your local experts for guidance on how to establish a safe and confidence boosting environment for you and your dog. Start training as early as you possibly can and you’ll see the fruits of your dedication pay off in the long run.
